This is a great example of a New Orleans Guitars Voodoo model, a single cutaway custom design with a Presentation Grade Redwood Burl top finished in Amber with one of the finest pieces of Black Lima I have ever seen for the body and neck. We all know how Black Limba sounds in the body of a guitar, this may be the first one I have seen that the body of the guitar looks as good or better than the presentation Grade top. This is an amazing guitar.
The guitar is a single cutaway design solid body. It is a neck through design with a 5 piece Black Limba neck laminated with Maple. The Black Limba is obviously from the same billet as the body because you have to look hard to see that the entire back and neck is not carved out of a single piece of wood. The top is an exceptional piece of Presentation Grade Redwood Burl heavily figured with an amber finish. The pickup mounting rings are made from Curly Maple. The neck and headstock are bound with three piece Maple/Cocobolo. The fretboard is Cocobolo that extends to the headstock face and truss rod cover.
The fretboard has the New Orleans trade mark Flame Inlay motif of Abalone. The Cocobolo on the headstock is left sanded to a 600 grit level and then oiled to closely match the color of the fretboard. The result is a flawless soft matt feel that closely matches the natural Cocobolo on the fretboard. The guitar is equipped with Nickel Chrome Tone Pros hardware as well as Grover tuners. The pickups are a pair of Dimarzio’s with a Custom PAF-DP195 in the neck position wired series/parallel and an F spaced Air Zone - DP192 in the bridge in series. This is a great set of pickups for a 24 fret guitar at stage volumes, very touch sensitive and articulate. It has lots of balls but doesn’t color the wood’s tonal character.
The control knobs are natural wood bells of the same Redwood Burl recessed into the top with a three position pickup selector and phase switch. The over all finish work of this instrument is without equal. There is not a rough edge anywhere, and the combination of the highly figured Redwood Burl top, gorgeous Black Limba body and neck with the Cocobolo fretboard and headstock is all masterfully done.
